The excitement of the 2026 SHS placement released today, September 4, 2026, comes with disappointment for some families.
According to data accompanying this year's results, 54,985 candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, will not be placed. This means they will not find their names when they check the Computerized School Selection and Placement System, CSSPS, portal at https://cssps.gov.gh.
What does 54,985 failed mean?
In WAEC grading, failing BECE does not always mean you scored zero. The Ghana Education Service, GES, has a clear rule for placement.
To qualify for SHS or TVET placement in Ghana, you must pass all your core subjects. That is English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies. If you get Grade 9 in any core subject, especially English and Mathematics, the CSSPS system automatically disqualifies you.
The 54,985 figure therefore includes three groups: candidates who had Grade 9 in core subjects, candidates who had results cancelled or withheld due to examination malpractice, and candidates who were absent for one or more core papers.
Why the number is high this year
Teachers we have spoken to say this year's BECE was stricter. WAEC introduced new measures to stop malpractice. The delay in placement from August 31 to September 4 was also because GES and WAEC were doing final verification of results. The press statement signed by Press Secretary Hashmin Mohammed on August 30 said about 20,000 students had their choices pending.
What to do if you are part of the 54,985
1. Confirm your results first. Go to https://eresults.waecgh.org and buy a checker. Check your real grades before you conclude.
2. Apply for remarking. If you believe your grade is wrong, request re-marking through your school or nearest WAEC office.
3. Register for Private BECE 2027. Registration usually opens in November. You only re-write the papers you failed.
4. Consider TVET options. Ghana TVET Service allows you to re-sit core subjects while learning a skill.
WARNING: Beware of scammers. No one can place you on http://cssps.gov.gh if WAEC says you did not qualify. Anyone asking for money on Facebook or WhatsApp to help you is a fraudster.
