Bleoo Makes History!
Accra Academy has made history. The Kaneshie-based giants have qualified for the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Grand Finale for the first time since the competition started in 1993.
The historic moment came on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the University of Cape Coast, when Accra Academy beat two strong schools to pick the last ticket to the finale.
How It Happened
In the last semi-final contest of the day, Accra Academy faced Achimota School and Bright Senior High School.
At the end of five tough rounds, the scoreboard said it all:
- Accra Academy - 54 points
- Bright SHS - 44 points
- Achimota School - 43 points
Accra Academy started strong in Round One with 16 points, led the Speed Race in Round Two with 28 points, and sealed it with a perfect 10/10 in the Problem of the Day. All three schools scored 10/10 in that round and took home GH¢3,400 each, but Bleoo was already ahead.
This win ends years of heartbreak for the school. Since 2019, Accra Academy has been knocked out at the quarter-final stage, including painful semi-final losses to PRESEC Legon in 2016 and 2023.
Accra Academy's Past NSMQ Record - Why This Means So Much
For a school that is Category A and one of Ghana's oldest schools founded in 1931, Accra Academy's NSMQ story has been full of near misses.
Bleoo made their first NSMQ appearance in the early 90s but never went beyond the semi-final. In 2016, they lost to PRESEC in the semis by just 4 points. In 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, they were stopped at the quarter-final, mostly by schools like Prempeh College, St. Augustine's and Opoku Ware.
In 2024, they did not even make it to the quarter-finals. Many students thought the dream was over. But the 2026 team led by their coach and NSMQ coordinator changed everything with extra classes, old boys support, and aggressive speed race training.
This is why the jama was so heated. It was not just about winning a contest. It was 30 years of pain released in one night.
Heated Jama Session Takes Over Social Media
The moment Prof. Elsie Kaufmann declared Accra Academy winners, the auditorium erupted. Students, old boys, and teachers broke into a wild jama session that has now gone viral.
Videos of the jama chant - “Bleoo! Bleoo! We Are Going To The Finale” - are trending on X (Twitter), TikTok and YouTube. Many are calling it the best jama of NSMQ 2026. Old boys from UK, US and Canada have been posting the video on WhatsApp statuses with captions like “Finally!”

What Next? The Grand Finale
Accra Academy will now face two giants in the Grand Finale on September 10, 2026 at the National Theatre in Accra.
- PRESEC Legon - 8-time champions, chasing a record 9th title
- St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) - 2-time champions, making their 3rd straight finale appearance
- Accra Academy - First-ever finale, chasing a maiden trophy
It will be three schools, three stories, one trophy. Analysts say PRESEC are favourites, but Bleoo has nothing to lose, which makes them dangerous.
